As the newly appointed Provincial Almoner, I had the honour of attending my very first Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Dorset Masonic Care (DMC) Trustees General Committee held in the charming town of Blandford on Thursday.
At the AGM, following the trustees meeting, the atmosphere was buoyant as Chairman Matt Devereux graciously welcomed all attendees, which included the Provincial Grand Master, Steve James, along with representatives from 40 lodges, primarily their Almoners and Charity Stewards. The event was further enriched by the participation of the ladies from the Broken Column Association, adding a touch of camaraderie to the proceedings.
A highlight of the meeting was the revelation of DMC’s remarkable contributions over the past five years. The organisation has generously donated a staggering £100,000 to support Dorset Freemasons, their dependants, and the widows of Freemasons. In addition, DMC has extended its charitable reach by providing £55,000 to various non-masonic charities, including vital support for the air ambulance service and assistance for non-masonic families in need. They also committed £30,000 to Festival 25, illustrating their diverse philanthropic efforts.
However, DMC’s impact transcends mere financial donations. In 2024 alone, DMC has already issued eight emergency grants, four personal welfare grants, and three home repair grants, with six additional cases currently in progress. Their swift action in emergency situations is commendable, as they typically respond within 24 hours to urgent requests for assistance.
Central to this network of aid is the Lodge Almoner, who acts as a vital link to DMC, although members are encouraged to reach out directly if needed.
On a community-focused note, the 16 defibrillators positioned outside our Masonic halls have recently received a thorough makeover thanks to DMC’s efforts. Each defibrillator unit has been meticulously cleaned, inspected, and restocked, and every cabinet has been enhanced with a new vinyl cover featuring updated signage. I invite you to take a moment to appreciate these improvements during your next visit to the lodge. Additionally, guardians have been appointed and trained for each location, ensuring a responsible and knowledgeable presence.
Looking ahead, the next meeting will take place in Blandford on Thursday 15 May at 6.30 pm to cover for those not able to attend during the day. I look forward to seeing everyone there as we continue to strengthen our commitment to charitable endeavours within Dorset Freemasonry.
